Best Calorie Counter Apps in 2026 (Free and Paid): Every Major App, Reviewed One by One

Quick answer

Every number in a calorie app is an estimate, so choose on consistency rather than claimed accuracy. Data provenance matters more than database size — and check what happens after the number.

Most people shopping for a calorie counter app — free or paid — ask which one is most accurate. That question has no answer.

The number on the label is calculated from the nutrients present, not measured in the package you are holding. The database entry was typed by someone. Your portion is an eyeball estimate.

Your daily expenditure is a formula's guess.

So change the criterion. If the absolute number is approximate, what matters is consistency — the same food, logged the same way, every time.

Then the number can be wrong and the trend still right.

This guide takes the main apps one at a time: what each is built for, what it does well, where it falls down, and who it suits.

Free and paid features and ratings were checked against store listings and official help pages and are current as of October 2026.

HAVIT is made by the team that wrote this guide. We've set out how each app was judged, and where HAVIT is not the best pick.

Logging is a habit problem before it is an accuracy problem
Logging is a habit problem before it is an accuracy problem

01

Three things to check before you pick

1. How many seconds per log? Most people eat a small rotation of meals.

The app that turns Tuesday breakfast into one tap beats a more accurate app that makes you search for it every morning — because you will still be using it months from now.

2. Where does the data come from? Not size. Provenance. A heavily user-submitted database has the same product entered several times at different values.

A verified database is smaller and trustworthy. Decide which failure you prefer.

3. What happens after the number? If the app only reports, around week five it starts to feel like bookkeeping. Look for something that reads the log and tells you what to change.

HAVIT's AI coach reads every log and returns one concrete action
HAVIT's AI coach reads every log and returns one concrete action

One thing separates it from the rest. A calorie app watches what you ate.

HAVIT tracks meals, hydration, workouts, sleep, steps, cycle, mood and GLP-1 medication — and the AI coach reads every log together.

That is what lets it answer a stalled week. Protein has been under target four days running, you slept under six hours twice, and you are in the week before your period — those three are connected, and here is the one to fix first. A food-only app has no way to see any of it.

The database: provenance over size

Where an entry comes from matters more than how many there are
Where an entry comes from matters more than how many there are

432,418 USDA branded foods

the US public food database

41,218 Korea MFDS branded foods

12,671 curated entries with full nutrient data

MyFitnessPal lists more than 20.5 million foods, but most are user-submitted — which is why one grocery-store yogurt can come back as a dozen near-identical entries with meaningfully different numbers.

HAVIT's 486,000 are drawn from public food authorities, not uploads. Smaller, and you can say where each number came from.

Logging in seconds

AI Food Scan — photograph a meal, get an estimated breakdown
AI Food Scan — photograph a meal, get an estimated breakdown

AI Food Scan (HAVIT Premium) turns a photo into an estimated calorie and nutrient breakdown. That is what gets mixed, home-cooked meals logged instead of skipped.

Searching the database and entering food by hand are free.

Body composition, not just weight

Body insights — fat and lean trends rather than a single number
Body insights — fat and lean trends rather than a single number

HAVIT estimates fat and lean mass trends without hardware, and publishes an internal comparison against InBody (n=70).

It is an estimate, not a DEXA or InBody measurement.

On GLP-1 therapy that matters more: the lean-mass share of weight lost has been reported at 40–60% in some trials and 15% or less in others (Neeland 2024) — either way, a bathroom scale reports it all as success.

HAVIT logs dose, side effects and protein in the same place.

What keeps you logging

Daily missions turn established behavior-change techniques into one action for today.

The daily check-in (HAVIT Premium) takes condition, sleep, appetite and mood in a few taps, so the coach knows what kind of day it is before it asks anything.

Streaks, badges, avatars, ranks and team challenges sit on top.

And the parts that are not numbers

Guided meditation for cravings, sleep, calm, focus, breathing and gratitude
Guided meditation for cravings, sleep, calm, focus, breathing and gratitude

Six guided-meditation tracks, workout video and 1,400+ articles in the Discover tab (HAVIT Premium), plus fasting logs — in the same app.

Built with experts from Juvis Diet, a Korean diet clinic.

Where HAVIT is not the best pick

If you need every vitamin and mineral tracked from verified entries, Cronometer goes deeper.

If you eat mostly chain-restaurant meals and obscure brands, MyFitnessPal's database will find more of them.

And if free macro tracking is what you are after, note that HAVIT's carbohydrate, protein and fat analysis is part of HAVIT Premium.

Who it suits: people who log but still don't know what to change; people whose weight is tangled up with sleep, stress or cycle; people on a GLP-1; people tired of running four apps.

03

MyFitnessPal — the biggest database

MakerMyFitnessPal, Inc.
PriceFree · Premium · Premium+
Database20.5M+ foods (App Store listing), heavily user-submitted
App Store (US)4.7 (2,378,163 ratings)

What it does well. Breadth no one else matches. Chain-restaurant menus, obscure brands, foreign products — search and it is usually there.

Barcode scanning, meal scan and custom macro goals are there too, but as Premium features.

Where it falls down. That breadth comes from user submissions, so the same product appears several times at different values, and which entry you pick changes your daily total.

A new AI Coach adds nutrition insights, but the app is still built around the log.

Who it suits: people who eat a lot of packaged and restaurant food and are willing to pick entries carefully.

04

Cronometer — the most defensible data

MakerCronometer Software Inc.
PriceFree · Gold subscription
App Store (US)4.8 (99,448 ratings)
When micronutrients actually matter
When micronutrients actually matter

What it does well. Vitamins and minerals tracked properly, from curated and verified sources. For a deficiency, a clinical diet or a restrictive pattern there is almost no substitute.

Where it falls down. Verification means a smaller database and more manual entry. Your local bakery's bread is not in it. Photo and voice logging and the fasting timer are Gold features.

Who it suits: people who genuinely need micronutrient numbers.

05

MacroFactor — targets that adapt

PriceSubscription · 7-day trial, no free tier
App Store (US)4.8 (23,247 ratings)

What it does well. Recalculates your calorie and macro targets from your own observed intake and weight trend rather than re-running a formula.

For a deliberate cut or bulk, that is the strongest argument in this category.

Where it falls down. No free tier to sit on, and it reasons from scale weight rather than body composition.

Who it suits: people running a structured cut or bulk who want the math handled.

06

Lose It! — the simplest calorie budget

MakerFitNow, Inc.
PriceFree · Premium subscription
App Store (US)4.8 (781,112 ratings)

What it does well. Simple calorie logging and a personalized calorie budget on the free tier. GLP-1 support — medication logging with estimated levels — was added recently.

Where it falls down. The barcode scanner, macro tracking, photo and voice logging and intermittent fasting are all listed under Premium.

Who it suits: people who want a straightforward calorie budget and can do without macros on the free tier.

07

YAZIO — built around the eating window

MakerYAZIO GmbH
PriceFree · PRO subscription
App Store (US)4.7 (51,243 ratings)

What it does well. A calorie counter with basic macros, a barcode scanner in its base feature list and a fasting tracker in the same app, for people who respond to a clear eating window.

Where it falls down. Access to all fasting plans, AI photo tracking, detailed nutrition breakdowns and an ad-free experience are PRO (per YAZIO's help center).

Thinner coverage of restaurant items and niche brands than MyFitnessPal.

Who it suits: people whose plan is built on when they eat.

08

Photo-first AI loggers, such as Cal AI

The shortest path from plate to log
The shortest path from plate to log

What they do well. Speed. For mixed dishes and other people's cooking they decide whether a meal gets logged at all.

Cal AI, the best known (4.8 on the US App Store from 370,651 ratings), requires a subscription for scan results; MyFitnessPal announced in March 2026 that it had acquired it.

Where they fall down. A model looking at a photograph cannot see absorbed oil or weigh what is under the top layer. Read the figure as the midpoint of a range.

Who they suit: people who quit tracking because it was slow. Expect to pay for it: photo scanning is a paid feature in most apps here, HAVIT's AI Food Scan included.

What you get free

"Free" means something different in every app.

The table below lists what each app's own App Store listing and help pages put on the free tier and what they reserve for the paid plan, as of October 2026.

HAVIT's row reflects its default settings as of October 2026; promotions sometimes open some Premium features for free.

If you want a free barcode scanner, Cronometer says so outright, and YAZIO lists its scanner among base features rather than PRO; for free custom macro targets, Cronometer.

If speed is what keeps you logging, photo scanning is the paid part almost everywhere — Cal AI, Cronometer Gold, Lose It! Premium, MyFitnessPal Premium, YAZIO PRO and HAVIT Premium alike.

How to count without burning out

Log the same way every time.

Pick one entry for your usual oats and reuse it.

Weigh only the dense things.

Oils, nuts, nut butters and dry grains pack the most energy into the smallest volume.

Read the week, not the day.

Daily totals swing on water, salt and cycle.

Front-load protein.

It is the part of the plan that holds up when calories are imperfect.

Stop logging perfectly and start logging always.

A rough entry beats a blank day by a wide margin.

12

The bottom line

Choose on consistency, not on claimed accuracy. The best calorie app is the one where logging your actual Tuesday dinner takes ten seconds.

Then check what comes after the number. If the log never turns into one thing to do today, you bought a ledger.

Frequently asked questions

Which calorie counting app is the most accurate?
None of them, in the way the question implies. The label is a calculated figure, the database entry was typed by someone, your portion is an eyeball estimate, and your expenditure is a formula. Cronometer is the most defensible on data quality because its entries are verified, but the daily total is still a range. Choose for consistency instead.
Is there a free calorie counter app, and how much can you do for free?
Yes. Cronometer's free tier includes food logging, micronutrients, a barcode scanner and custom macro targets. MyFitnessPal's free tier covers food, weight and exercise tracking, but barcode scan, meal scan and custom macro goals are Premium. Lose It! and YAZIO count calories for free. MacroFactor has no free tier, and Cal AI needs a subscription for scan results. HAVIT's free tier covers meal logging with calories per meal, weight, water, sleep, fasting, cycle and GLP-1 logs, the body-composition estimate and a coach chat with a daily message limit; macro analysis and AI Food Scan are HAVIT Premium (default settings, October 2026).
Is MyFitnessPal or Cronometer better?
They optimize for opposite things. MyFitnessPal wins on breadth — 20.5M+ foods, strong on chain restaurants — because it is heavily user-submitted, which is also why one product can appear many times at different values. Cronometer wins on verified entries and micronutrient depth and asks more manual entry in return.
What is the cheapest calorie counting app?
MyFitnessPal, Cronometer, Lose It! and YAZIO all have free tiers; MacroFactor has none. HAVIT is free to download, with meal logging and calories free and macro analysis and AI Food Scan in HAVIT Premium. Pricing in this category changes often enough that any figure printed in an article goes stale, so compare the current plans on the store listing.
Are photo-based AI calorie estimates reliable?
They are fast, and they are estimates. A model inferring a portion from an image cannot see absorbed oil or weigh what is under the top layer. Treat the figure as the midpoint of a range. That is an acceptable trade if speed is what keeps you logging — though in most apps, HAVIT included, photo scanning is a paid feature.
Which app tracks body composition as well as calories?
Very few. Most calorie apps work from scale weight alone. HAVIT estimates fat and lean mass trends from your own inputs with no hardware, and publishes an internal comparison against InBody (n=70). It is an estimate, useful as a trend over weeks rather than as a single verified number.
Why am I under my calorie target but not losing weight?
The target itself is an estimate, and daily totals swing with water, salt, cycle and glycogen. Read a weekly rolling average. If a stalled week coincides with poor sleep or the week before your period, a food-only app has no way to show you that — which is why HAVIT reads sleep, steps and cycle alongside meals.

What is HAVIT?

HAVIT is an AI health partner built on metabolic science — it protects your muscle, wakes up your metabolism, and helps you keep a healthy, rebound-free body for the long run.

Unlike calorie-only trackers, HAVIT connects AI body-composition estimates, nutrition, hydration, sleep, steps, cycle, mood, and GLP-1 medication in one daily routine — so progress is measured by body composition, not just the number on the scale. Daily missions turn established behavior-change techniques into small repeatable actions, drawing on expertise from professionals formerly at Juvis Diet, one of Korea’s leading metabolic clinics.

In HAVIT’s own analysis of 1,090 GLP-1 users, people who logged consistently built stronger habits than the general user base. Read the GLP-1 Habit Report
