Best Macro Tracker Apps in 2026: Protein-First Macros, Compared App by App

Quick answer

Pick a macro app by protein, not by three numbers. Set protein in grams, check whether gram targets are free, and prefer an app that can tell you whether the weight you lose is fat or lean mass (mostly muscle and water).

Most macro apps are built around one question: did you hit your three numbers today? That is a fine question for a bodybuilder on a planned cut.

For most people trying to lose weight it is the wrong one to start with.

When you eat less, the scale cannot tell fat from lean mass. Lose a lot of lean mass and the number still goes down — and you have made the next year harder.

The macro that decides which way that goes is protein. Carbohydrate and fat are mostly a matter of preference and energy budget. Protein is the one with a floor.

So this guide reads macro apps with a different first question: does the app put protein first, and can it tell you whether the weight you are losing is fat or lean mass (mostly muscle and water)? Each app is taken one at a time.

Free and paid features were checked against App Store listings and official help pages and are current as of October 2026.

HAVIT is made by the team that wrote this guide. We've set out how each app was judged, and where HAVIT is not the best pick.

01

Three things to check before you pick

1. Can you set a protein target in grams — for free? Percent-of-calories targets drift as calories drop: 30% of 2,400 kcal and 30% of 1,500 kcal are very different amounts of protein.

A gram target holds. Several big apps put gram-based macro goals behind the paywall, so check this first.

2. Does it see body composition, or only weight? A macro plan is meant to change what your body is made of.

If the only outcome the app records is scale weight, it cannot tell you whether the plan is protecting muscle.

3. How fast is a mixed meal? Macro tracking fails at home cooking and restaurant plates, not at protein bars.

Barcode scanning handles packaged foods; photo or text logging handles the rest.

The difference is what the macros are read against. Most macro apps compare your day to a target and stop.

HAVIT logs calories, protein, carbohydrate and fat for each meal (the macro breakdown is a Premium feature), estimates fat and lean mass trends, and the AI coach reads both — together with sleep, steps, cycle, mood and GLP-1 medication.

That is what turns a macro log into a decision. Protein has been under target four days running and the lean trend is drifting down — the first fix is protein at breakfast, not fewer calories. An app that only knows grams cannot write that sentence.

Logging the meals that break macro tracking

AI Food Scan — photograph a meal, get an estimated breakdown
AI Food Scan — photograph a meal, get an estimated breakdown

AI Food Scan (HAVIT Premium) turns a photo into an estimated calorie and macro breakdown — the stir-fry, the home-cooked stew, the plate someone else served you.

The database behind it is drawn from public food authorities rather than user uploads.

Body composition, not just weight

Body insights — fat and lean trends rather than a single number
Body insights — fat and lean trends rather than a single number

HAVIT estimates fat and lean trends with no hardware.

In an internal comparison study (n=70), 92.9% of HAVIT's body-fat estimates fell within ±5 percentage points of InBody readings.

It is an estimate for wellness tracking, not a medical, DEXA or InBody measurement — read it as a trend over weeks.

On GLP-1 therapy this matters more: the lean-mass share of weight lost has been reported at 40–60% in some trials and 15% or less in others. Dose, side effects and protein are logged in the same app.

Where HAVIT is not the best pick

If you want every micronutrient tracked from verified data, Cronometer goes deeper.

If you want an algorithm whose whole job is to recalculate calorie and macro targets every week from your weigh-ins, MacroFactor and Carbon are built for exactly that.

HAVIT's case is protein-first macros connected to body composition and the rest of your day — not the most granular macro spreadsheet.

Run check 1 on HAVIT, too: the free tier logs meals and shows calories per meal, but the carbohydrate, protein and fat analysis is part of HAVIT Premium.

If free gram-level macro targets are the deciding factor, Cronometer is the better pick.

Who it suits: people losing weight who care whether it is fat or lean mass; people on a GLP-1 whose appetite makes protein hard; people who want macros, sleep and cycle read together instead of in four apps.

03

MacroFactor — targets that adapt to your data

MakerStronger By Science Technologies
PriceSubscription · 7-day trial, no free tier
App Store (US)4.8 (23,247 ratings)

What it does well. An algorithm estimates your energy expenditure from your own intake and weight trend and adjusts your calorie and macro targets as you go.

Barcode scanning and AI photo logging are both in. For a deliberate cut or bulk, this is the strongest pure macro engine on the list.

Where it falls down. There is no free tier — the listing says it plainly. It also works from scale weight; body composition and sleep are outside its view.

Who it suits: people running a structured cut or bulk who want the math handled and will pay for it.

04

Cronometer — the most generous free macro targets

MakerCronometer Software Inc.
PriceFree · Gold subscription
App Store (US)4.8 (99,448 ratings)

What it does well. Macro and micronutrient targets are customizable on the free tier (per Cronometer's 2022 free-features post), the barcode scanner is free, and entries come from curated, verified sources.

If you want gram-level protein targets without paying, this is the clearest yes in the category.

Where it falls down. Photo and voice logging, the fasting timer and day-by-day macro scheduling are Gold features, and the free tier carries ads.

Logging mixed home cooking takes more manual work.

Who it suits: people who want precise macro and micronutrient numbers and are happy to enter food by hand.

05

MyFitnessPal — the biggest database, custom macros on Premium

MakerMyFitnessPal, Inc.
PriceFree · Premium · Premium+
App Store (US)4.7 (2,378,163 ratings)

What it does well. The largest food database in the category — chain restaurants, obscure brands, foreign products.

In March 2026 it announced that it had acquired Cal AI, and the app now has GLP-1 dose logging and reminders.

Where it falls down. Macro tracking with custom goals — including viewing macros in grams — the barcode scanner and meal scan are Premium features.

Much of the database is user-submitted, so one product can appear at several values.

Who it suits: people who eat a lot of packaged and restaurant food and are willing to pick entries carefully.

06

Carbon Diet Coach — weekly macro check-ins

MakerReform, LLC
PriceSubscription only
App Store (US)4.8 (8,110 ratings)

What it does well. Sets a macro plan and adjusts it at weekly check-ins based on your results, including when you stall. Barcode scanner included.

Where it falls down. No free tier found on the store listing or the official pricing page. Like MacroFactor, it reasons from scale weight rather than body composition.

Who it suits: people who want a coach-style weekly adjustment and do not want to set numbers themselves.

07

Lose It! — simple, but macros are a Premium feature

MakerFitNow, Inc.
PriceFree · Premium
App Store (US)4.8 (781,112 ratings)

What it does well. Very simple calorie logging on the free tier, and a long track record. GLP-1 medication logging was added recently.

Where it falls down. For a macro search this is the catch: macro tracking and macro targets, the barcode scanner and photo logging are all listed under Premium.

Who it suits: people who mostly want a calorie budget and are fine paying for macros later.

Setting macros that hold up

Set protein first, in grams.

Then split the remaining calories between carbohydrate and fat however you like eating.

Know what the 1.6 g/kg figure means.

In a meta-analysis of 49 trials, healthy adults building muscle with resistance training saw no clear extra gain from protein beyond about 1.6 g per kg of body weight per day (about 0.7 g per pound; the upper 95% confidence limit was 2.2 g/kg). That is not a ceiling for a weight-loss phase — work out your target with your doctor or a dietitian.

Spread it across meals.

A low-protein breakfast is the most common gap, and the easiest one to close.

Lift something.

Protein protects muscle best alongside resistance training.

Judge by the trend.

If weight falls but the lean trend falls with it, fix protein and training before cutting calories further.

On a GLP-1, talk to your clinician about your protein target — appetite is lower, and the target matters more.

For a starting point, see our macro ratio guide by body-composition goal and protein tracking on GLP-1.

The bottom line

A macro app that only checks three numbers against a target is half a tool.

Put protein first, in grams, and choose an app that can show you whether the weight you are losing is fat or lean mass.

If you want the strongest pure macro algorithm, MacroFactor. If you want free gram-level targets and micronutrients, Cronometer.

If you want protein-first macros read next to body composition, sleep, cycle and medication by one coach, HAVIT (its macro analysis is part of HAVIT Premium).

Frequently asked questions

What is the best macro tracking app?
It depends on what you want the macros to do. For an algorithm that recalculates targets from your data, MacroFactor. For free gram-level targets and micronutrients, Cronometer. For protein-first macros read next to estimated body composition, sleep, cycle and GLP-1 medication, HAVIT.
Is there a free macro tracker app?
Yes. As of October 2026, Cronometer lets you customize macro and micronutrient targets on its free tier and includes a free barcode scanner. MyFitnessPal lists macro tracking with custom goals as a Premium feature, and Lose It! lists macro tracking under Premium. HAVIT's free tier logs meals with calories, but its macro analysis is part of HAVIT Premium. MacroFactor and Carbon have no free tier.
Should I track macros in grams or percentages?
Grams, at least for protein. A percentage target shrinks as your calories drop, so the protein you actually eat falls exactly when you most need it to protect muscle. Set protein in grams, then split the rest between carbohydrate and fat.
How much protein should I aim for?
It depends on your body, goal and health, so agree on a target with your doctor or dietitian, especially if you have a condition or take a GLP-1. For context, a meta-analysis of 49 resistance-training trials in healthy adults found no clear extra muscle gain from protein beyond about 1.6 g per kg of body weight per day (about 0.7 g per pound; upper 95% confidence limit 2.2 g/kg). That figure comes from people building muscle, not from people in a calorie deficit.
Can a macro app tell me if I am losing fat or lean mass?
Most cannot — they work from scale weight. HAVIT estimates fat and lean trends with no hardware; in an internal comparison study (n=70), 92.9% of its body-fat estimates fell within ±5 percentage points of InBody readings. It is an estimate for tracking over weeks, not a medical, DEXA or InBody measurement.

What is HAVIT?

HAVIT is an AI health partner built on metabolic science — it protects your muscle, wakes up your metabolism, and helps you keep a healthy, rebound-free body for the long run.

Unlike calorie-only trackers, HAVIT connects AI body-composition estimates, nutrition, hydration, sleep, steps, cycle, mood, and GLP-1 medication in one daily routine — so progress is measured by body composition, not just the number on the scale. Daily missions turn established behavior-change techniques into small repeatable actions, drawing on expertise from professionals formerly at Juvis Diet, one of Korea’s leading metabolic clinics.

In HAVIT’s own analysis of 1,090 GLP-1 users, people who logged consistently built stronger habits than the general user base. Read the GLP-1 Habit Report
